    Yet, when it comes to writing copy for our websites, brochures, marketing and selling campaigns and more – many of us forget how powerful words are. The right words can lift the hearts and minds of readers and make them happily say “yes” to doing business with you. The wrong words – or words chosen carelessly often result in visitors clicking away and that means you get little or no sales. This hugely influences your business success, your cash flow and the lifestyle you get to enjoy no matter how hard you work.

    I talk with many small and home-based business owners who don’t get it. They use minimal words to describe their products or services, chosen with little care or concern. They say they just want to “keep it simple.” Then, they wonder why no one buys from them even when they have plenty of visitors flowing to their website. It’s all about the words. 

    Your Words are Your Online Voice

    I remember back when I first got online in 1997. (I remember because it was a week before I met my husband. But I digress.) I ended up having a conversation with a couple web designers. Ecommerce was new. We had a sharp difference of opinion because I said for online businesses to work, powerful, impactful, persuasive copywriting will be more important than ever before. “Words are your online voice,” I said. Copywriting was my first job out of college and I’ve been writing copy, articles, media releases and much more ever since. 

    The web designers insisted people would buy products and services based on visuals: pictures, spinning bunnies, dancing babies and stuff. (This was 1997.)

    Let me ask you: When was the last time you saw a spinning bunny, a dancing baby or animated anything on a web page meant to sell a product or service?

    Most business advisors from your web designer to your banker and your mom want to help. They want you to be successful and they probably want your relationship to be win-win. Their intentions are good. But they don’t necessarily understand what it takes to make customers say “yes” happily online. Only a skilled copywriter can help you in this area. And, more web experts don’t know beans when it comes to writing copy.

    Well-written copy sells. My sole income comes from people purchasing products and services through my websites. Believe me – they wouldn’t bother if they didn’t read the page and click “yes” or “buy now” happy and eager to take the next step. Well-written copy provides me a lifestyle and income that would be impossible otherwise.

    My first job out of college was as a copywriter for what used to be the largest retailer in the USA. “Martha” still sells her sheets and pots and pans there. I did well and got high praise for my work. I had a degree with double majors in Business-Marketing and Journalism-Advertising. After my experience as an ad copywriter in an advertising department of 72 people I jumped into entrepreneurship and owning my own businesses. Eventually the Internet was born and like everyone else I wanted to sell online. 

    Surely, I should’ve had the tools to write great, effective copy for online sales. But I struggled for awhile. It’s embarrassing to admit this – but people would say my sales letters were the best thing they ever read on the Internet. But they didn’t buy. I didn’t want compliments on my writing style. I wanted cash flow. Finally when I got serious about learning the tips and secrets to online copywriting it super-charged my copy. My results and cash flow skyrocketed.
